The
mission of Cadet Programs is a top priority for the Nevada Wing, and as such it has received a large amount of support in terms of
logistics and senior personnel.
The success of Nevada Wing Cadet
Program is due to the work of Squadron Commanders and the Deputy Commanders for Cadets.
These dedicated individuals take their time and energies to CAP activities and
weekly meetings and have positively shaped the lives of countless Nevada Civil
Air Patrol Cadets.
CAP squadrons are divided into
three types - Senior, Cadet and Composite. Cadet and composite squadron
include cadet members. Please use the squadrons index on the right nav bar
to learn more about a particular squadron.
1. National
Cadet Special Activities: There are over 30 special activities for
members to choose from. For most activities, the application window runs from 1
November through 31 December. For more information, please see
www.cap.gov/ncsa. Please direct your NCSA-related questions to Kelly
Easterling at
keasterling@cap.gov or Don Karle at
dkarle@cap.gov.
2. Scholarships: Over $200,000 in
college or flight scholarships are available to CAP members. There are a couple
fantastic opportunities in particular that go unused.
Texas A&M University’s Cadet
Corps would love to give scholarships to CAP cadets. Recipients automatically
qualify for in-state tuition, so the scholarship is effectively worth $10,000 or
more. This is a great opportunity for cadets who want to attend college in a
military environment.
Auburn University in Alabama
would like to award $6000 to help a cadet study fiber engineering. When you
think of “fiber engineering” you might think of carpets and apparel. At Auburn,
the program is emphasizing its aerospace-related applications more and more.
Dowling College of Aviation in
New York has $4000 and $8000 scholarships for CAP cadets. They offer great
programs for students aspiring to become professional pilots, air traffic
controllers, and more.
Please make a special effort to spread the word about those scholarship
programs. For more information, see
www.cap.gov/scholarships or contact Kelly Easterling at
keasterling@cap.gov.
3. Moral Leadership: Chaplains
and MLOs should be using CAPP 265-2, “Flight Time: Values for Living” case
studies during cadet moral leadership forums. The chaplains’ group has published
a new series of case studies for this purpose. Visit
www.cap.gov/cadets and click the “Moral Leadership” link to download the new
pamphlet, dated July 2006. Tracy Harris (tharris@cap.gov)
provides administrative support for this program.
4. Leadership Feedback: We’ve
created a webpage with FAQs and best practices to help units provide cadets with
leadership feedback using the new CAPF 50’s. A slide briefing is also available
on that page to help commanders introduce cadets to the new “Leadership
Expectations” chart (ref: CAPR 52-16, Fig 2-2) and the new CAPF 50’s. To visit
the webpage, go to
www.cap.gov/cadets and click “Leadership Feedback.” If you have questions
about this program, please contact me at
clafond@cap.gov.
5. Level One and CPPT: The
professional development team has completely re-designed the Level One course,
including the Cadet Protection Policy Training. Members can begin using the new
course materials now. For details, please see
www.cap.gov/one. If you have questions about Level One, please contact Rob
Smith at
rsmith@cap.gov.
6. Investing in America’s Youth:
The “Investing” brochure (CAPP 52) tells the “big picture” story of the Cadet
Program and is a great ‘leave-behind’ to use when meeting with community
leaders, school principals, business executives, etc. (Every unit should have
received some copies of the brochure about a year ago.) We still have plenty of
the brochures in inventory, so if your wing would like a stack, please send
email me at
clafond@cap.gov. Please note that this brochure is not intended for mass
recruiting, airshows, etc.
7. Cadet Home Page: The cadet
home page,
www.cap.gov/cadets, is loaded with resources — there’s probably more useful
tools available there than you realize. We recently re-organized the page to
make it easier for members to use. If you have any suggestions for our page,
please email me at
clafond@cap.gov.
8. Encampments: We have a
webpage,
www.cap.gov/encampment, that lists all the encampments available across the
country — at least the encampments you tell us about. This page is especially
handy for cadets who want to attend an encampment but can’t make it to their
wing’s program. To have your encampment added to our page, simply email me at
clafond@cap.gov.
